After yesterday’s speculation about Shingo K’s golf shoes – adapted running or walking shoes or just plain ones available to you & me… I had another go at the Japanese website and found these!  Tee 113 they’re called.  I know nothing else about them as I still don’t do Japanese reading!
But how dull can you get!  If you look at Asics’ other shoes they are ambitious in everything – styling, techology, colours!  But these could be the dullest golf shoes on earth from a looks point of view.  No wonder Shingo has gone for the ones he does wear – he wants to show-case the company not the opposite – whatever that may be called!

If the ASICS shoe company was an elite runner it would be known as a consistent competitor who always shows up at the starting line ready to race hard.  With few exceptions, ASICS has produced shoes that are of excellent quality, fit and performance. The GEL-Nimbus 11 ($125) is a prime example. As a long distance runner with a high arch, I need a neutral shoe that is comfortable and stable for the long haul, yet also light and fast for tempo runs.  This latest GEL-Nimbus model successfully meets both of my needs, making it my go-to shoe for training.  

(Disclaimer: I have trained in and worn the ASICS GEL-Nimbus shoe for several years now, but this also makes me quite critical of any changes ASICS makes from model to model).

The GEL-Nimbus 11 improves upon the cushioning and stability of previous models with the addition of a new comfort-centric lightweight upper. They also removed overlays at the end of the asymmetrical lacing, which allows for a larger and more traditional open-air mesh toe-box. I hadn’t realized just how restrictive the previous model’s toe-box had been until I started running in this version, but I really do appreciate having more room and breath-ability in this area.  ASICS also did away with seams to reduce heel irritation while the high-density foam in the heel area molds well to individual heel shape and structure, decreasing slippage and improving fit.  I have a narrow heel and have had problems with slippage in the past, but found that in the GEL-Nimbus 11 my heel stays in place without feeling too tightly restricted. Suffice to say that at the end of long marathon training runs my feet felt as comfortable in the shoes as when I had first put them on. 

ASICS also changed the midsole of the shoe, which significantly reduces the weight (making it 12.4-ounces versus the previous 13.2-ounces ).  Previous models had a compression molded midsole and ASICS improved upon this with the use of Solyte in the GEL-Nimbus 10,  a significantly lighter cushioning material than EVA cushioning materials.  For the GEL-Nimbus 11, ASICS also improved the composition of Solyte, which is supposed to give the shoe more bounce back and make it more durable.  I definitely felt an increase in response to impact, but this could also be due to the fact that any new shoe feels better upon impact.  The jury is still out on Solyte, but day in and day out I do appreciate a lighter shoe that doesn’t sacrifice comfort for less weight.

Women also have different injury patterns than men. 

I care more about having women's-specific technology than color. In the GEL-Nimbus 11, ASICS uses a gender-specific “space trusstic” system that adjusts to the normal periodic changes in the shape of a woman’s arch and incorporates a molded component under the mid-foot to provide stability and aid in controlling torsion.  In the men’s model the shoe accounts for the typically higher compression weight of the male footstrike by incorporating a denser injection in the forefoot.       

 Although changes from one model of a running shoe to another can often be hit or miss, ASICS definitely has a hit with the new GEL-Nimbus 11.  I’ve been running heavy mileage in this shoe for a while now and I’m still getting a consistently great fit and performance, which makes both me and my feet very happy!

The Gel Nimbus is a very popular Asics shoe and I must admit I am much happier with Gel Nimbus 11 than I was with Gel Nimbus 10 or 9. In fact, the 11 is a great shoe for a neutral runner with high arches, shin splints and IT band soreness. As long as you don’t pronate too much you should be just fine.
Here are some of the major differences between the three versions.
    * Upper (top) -Differences between the uppers may mean the difference between crowding of the toes, puckering or perfect toe box room. As many of you know, I prefer regular lacing to asymmetrical lacing with the 11′s asymmetrical version (Asics is listening) being preferred to the 10. I am also pleased that the 11 toe box has full mesh like the 9 and not with trim over the big toe which can cause tendon or toe friction if prominent.

Yes, in The Netherlands—where I’m based—it’s already been available for months due to the lack of 2009 Kayano 15 stock. So every year the big question is: Are the shoes changed?

We tested the shoe with several athletes who pronate (some more than others), so we could compare how the 16 is different from the 15. Does this mean that this is now a better shoe? No it doesn’t. It is just a better shoe for those who tend more towards pronation—for which the 15 was just not stable and supportive enough.
For the athletes who were satisfied with the 15 I don’t think that you have to worry about injury issues when changing to the 16 unless you are on the other end of the scale and the 15 was almost too supportive for your running style. If you are not sure just go to your specialty running store and have your shoes checked.
Are there any other differences? Yes, the fit also has changed. The Kayano 16 is slightly more narrow then the 15, especially in the midfoot to forefoot. Also the asymmetric lacing is a little less asymmetric. In terms of cushioning they feel about the same. The big beefy Gel unit underneath the heel is the largest in the history of the Kayano and is also still there under the forefoot. And all of this doesn’t make the shoe any heavier; on the contrary it is even slightly lighter.
What I think the most pleasant change is that all of the testers said that the Kayano 16 felt a little more supple in heel-to-toe transition, so, it offers a smoother run. Overall, still one of the best shoes in this category.

Asics GT 2150 (2010)

During 2009 Asics produced for sale the GT-2140 and—if not creatively, at least predictably—for 2010 we now have the 2150.
This shoe changed between last year and this, just as this company’s Kayano underwent an overhaul. Like the Kayano, this model is more stable than the GT-2140. What we wrote about the Kayano holds true for this shoe’s update as well.
It’s not better or worse, just slightly more stable and you’ll like that—or not—based on your footfall and foot structure. There is no change in the amount of cushioning, as judged by those of us who wore the shoe during run trials. This should be no surprise since there is almost no difference in the placing of the Gel units. The more robust support seems to come from a more supportive forefoot on the medial side of the shoe. It appears to us that Asics uses the same injected SoLyte process in the midsole of the new GT-2150 as used in the Kayano. It is at certain points just slightly less soft then in the GT-2140 so, when you tend to pronate during the push off phase, it offers better support and limits the amount of pronation. This model will be a big hit for Asics in 2010.
